Origins and History

Science Museum is a museum that was founded in 1857 under Bennet woodcroft from the collection of Royal Society of Arts and surplus items from the major exhibition as part of the South Kensington museum, along with what is now the Victoria and Albert museum. This includes collection of machines that became a museum in 1858 patents, and patent office museum in 1863.

This collection contains many of the most famous exhibits of what is now the museum of science. In 1883, the contents of the patent office museum moved to South Kensington museum. In 1885, a collection of science and science museum named in 1893 was appointed a director of a separate collection of art changed its name to the art museum, which eventually became the Victoria and Albert museum.

When Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone for a new building for the museum of art, he determined that the museum will be renamed after her and her late husband. It originally applied to the entire museum, but when that new building finally opened ten years later, the title was limited to the collection of art and science collections should be divorced from it. On 26 June 1909, the museum of science, as an independent entity, came into the museum of science present quarters, designed by Sir Richard Allison, opened to the public in stages over the period 1919-1928.

This building is known as the Eastern bloc, which began construction in 1913 and temporarily halted by World War i. As the name suggests it was meant to be the first building of a much larger project, which never materialized.
